The instrumentalization of non-normative sexualities: Tunisia as an example

Speaker: Aïda Khemiri

Tunisian media has witnessed a booming since the 14 January 2011 revolution, with further openness and coverage of a variety of social and political issues. With this expansion, however, a race towards obtaining a “scoop” or scandal for financial benefit has been notable. As is the case in other contexts, Tunisian LGBT activists find themselves under direct scrutiny and attack by the media, while at the same time fighting law 230 which penalizes all homosexual acts with 3 years of prison. In this talk, Aïda Khemiri outlines her experience working with LGBT activists in a context where media exposure is a factor of hindrance rather than support
