Operation Anti Sexual Harassment – Opantish By Stephanie Gaspais

Opantish is an initiative that started in Cairo, Egypt, in November 2012, following the multiplication and intensification of mob sexual harassment and assaults on and around Tahrir square during protests. These assaults have been reported since 2005 and occur during crowded public events such as celebrations or protests. Since 2011, they have sharply increased in number and intensity. As an example, in the nine days from June 28th until July 7th2013, 186 cases of mob sexual assaults were reported during the massive protests on Tahrir square that saw the ousting of the Muslim Brotherhood leader and former president Mohamed Morsi.
